What’s That Smell? 4 Sneaky Things That Can Cause a Bad Smell in Your Home

What’s that smell? If you’ve been asking yourself that question lately, it’s time to do some investigating. There are several things that could be causing bad odors in your home.

It’s important to identify the source so you can take steps to eliminate it. In this blog post, we will discuss four common causes of home odor and how you can address them.

A Funky Musty Odor

If you’ve ever been in a home that’s had mold or water damage, then you’re familiar with the musty odor. It can be hard to get rid of once it has soaked into your home’s carpet and upholstery.

Luckily, there are some things you can do about it! To start, make sure all wet areas are dried completely. If the area is carpeted, you may need to have it replaced. You can also use a dehumidifier to help remove moisture from the air and prevent mold growth.

Mold can also cause a sour smell.

A Rotting Sink

If your kitchen sink smells like rotting food, it’s probably because of bacteria buildup in the drain. This can be because of food that’s hanging out in the drain.

But it could also mean that your home’s pipes need to be replaced! To clean bacteria out of the drain, you can use a mixture of vinegar and baking soda.

Dirty Air Ducts

If there’s an unpleasant odor in your home, it might just be coming from your air ducts! The best way to prevent this is to keep your air ducts clean.

You can do this by having them cleaned regularly or installing a home air purifier that will help filter out dirt and dust. Also, replace air ducts regularly as pet hair, dust, and other pollutants can get trapped in filters and cause a bad smell.

The Smell of Rotten Eggs

The smell of rotten eggs is usually caused by natural gas or hydrogen sulfide.  If you’ve ever turned on your home’s heating system and smelled something strange, it could be that your home has a leak in the pipes leading to a water heater or other plumbing fixture.

If this happens, turn off all appliances and leave the home immediately. Call a plumber AND the gas company. If the home heating unit or pipes aren’t the issue, check appliances for problems. Toilet paper in the washing machine, or actual rotten eggs in the kitchen may be the culprit.

If you’re still having trouble identifying the source of an odor in your home, contact a home restoration company to inspect your home for mold or fire damage! They’ll be able to tell you exactly what’s causing that smell.
